It’s difficult to overstate how much the US has given away in terms of negotiating leverage without any concessions at all in terms of the Russian side and without any progress at all. One Russian TV commentator put it: “Putin has taken a buzz saw through the Western Alliance and is ripping apart NATO as Russia has always wanted to. It’s fantastic!”

“DOD Hegseth has said, Ukraine will never join NATO, they’ve withdrawn Ukraine permission to strike with missiles inside Russian territory (giving the Russians sanctuary status). The administration is following the Russian attack lines saying the president of Ukraine is not legitimate because he hasn’t held election—which is natural, because a large part of the country is occupied and millions of people are displaced, both inside and outside the country. And, you have unsafe polling places, and soldiers fighting, unable to vote.”

“Having the US president parroting these attack lines, straight out of Russia’s position in the bi-lateral talks is disconcerting... just from a negotiating point of view and nothing else. The Russians are ecstatic. In a matter of two weeks, the administration has catastrophically undermined Ukraine’s diplomatic position, and undermined NATO’s aid position, which for the past 18 months has been significantly higher than the US.

“This idea that Ukraine is “freeloading” on US support is simply not true. What the US has done is give the Russians every incentive not to compromise. If you’re the Russians, just sit back and watch the US destroy its own position. Just watch Russian state TV. They are just delirious. They can’t believe what’s happening (in their favor). The Chinese are the same, but they are smart enough to be quiet about it.

“The British even offered to put British troops in as Peacekeepers, if a deal was worked out, but the Russians have already said, that’s unacceptable. So, obviously, the Russians are in no mood to compromise. And when Sec Hegseth said that if any NATO peacekeping Troops in Ukraine are attacked by Russia, they would not qualify as an Article 5 guarantee (of bringing the US and NATO into the war).

“So, there isn’t even a “trip wire” guarantee in these negotiations. [to provide Russia some fear of violating it]. The idea that there is going to be some sort of “ceasefire” that lasts without an “or else” or a “trip wire” force of European and NATO peacekeepers in place to stop the Russians from restarting the fighting, I just don’t see how it happens.

If you purposely tried to undermine your own negotiating positions and sever your relations with your allies, I don’t know what more you could have done, in 3 weeks! It’s astonishing. The Russian ambassador to London was asked in an interview with the BBC if they were prepared to give back any of the conquered territories? “Why should we?,” he responded. You have to have leverage in any negotiation, and the US has given it all away.
